Post-apocalypse

I think this is my best heavy psych discovery of the year. Pharaoh Overload, featuring members of the Finnish band Circle, which is also a-ma-zing.
This is incredibly psyched and incredibly heavy. You can't have an idea how well they do that before you listen to it. The sound is so pure, it's difficult to explain exactly but your ear can gets each distinct vibe at its full power. It's a perfectly layered composition that melts into a melody as a whole. And what takes me by the guts are these industrial sonorities, coming from a post-apocalyptical world, something you recognize from Circle. This is somehow extremely repetitive but being so, it takes you very high and let me be clear, never boring... Listening to this is a real trip.

Sungrazer

I don't know why all those bands must have a "sun" in their name. Must sound cool. Anyway, litteraly, the sound is cool. More than that. Sungrazer are one of the best heavy psych - stoner band out there. They sound a lot like Colour Haze, somehow slightly heavier. Perfect late night sound.

Californian trip

I highly recommand the californian band Sleepy Sun! I surely need to listen to this more than once, but I really like the peaceful atmosphere and the trippy passages, well this is some good lightweight psychedelic rock. Enjoy.

Punk in the face

Hm I don't know what this is exactly, I don't think I have heard something similar before, and if that exists... I absolutely want more of it!!!

Sorry, this is not stoner nor heavy psych, but I stumbled on it while youtubing... maybe because it contains the word "doom" in the name? Actually, after some googling, I find out there's a stoner band from Norway which has the same name. This guys here are from New York and well, it's cool to rinse your ears with new sounds from time to time.

Anyway, to me it falls into some hardcore punk category, and it really kicks asses. Hell yeah.

Buying CDs

Just went to a second-hand disc store. I usually never remember what I am searching for when I actually enter such music store, so I end up every time with unexpected stuff.
Well this time I bought a Corrosion of Conformity, and another album from the Australian band Tracer.

Both are a amazing, but let's present Tracer. Tracer !!!! shit I had already downloaded the L.A. album and had a very good feeling about it, but sometimes you tend to forget how good an artist can be.

From listening to Spaces in Between several times in a row, I can only recommand this !

What makes this band so good? That's a combination of multiple factors, but the first that grabed me by the guts, whatever the rest of the sound is like, is the voice. This is really a distinctive feature of Tracer, compared to some other stoner bands where you sometimes are really disappointed by a mediocre singing. This is a powerful voice, reminiscent of some old school hard rock, but with a peculiar tone that instantly reminded me of Klaus Meine from Scorpions. But strangely this voice may seduce me because of its multiple nuances. In the song I am putting in this post, Devil Ride, it doesn't sound so much like Klaus Meine, but more like a french singer Alain Bashung who had a really unique voice as well. But then some other songs will make me think of Soundgarden's voice...

So you may also wonder how is the overall sound. It's as good as the voice, in a similar manner being powerful and contrasted. In "genre" words, I would describe this music as hard rock, with blues and southern rock influences, and of course an important desert rock touch, with heavy riffs that seem unstoppable. But my main impression about the Tracer sound is in terms of very general words: contrast. Unlike some bands that you need to stop listening after five minutes because it's just a wall of equal sound, these guys here know how to generate powerful songs by really bringing contrast to it. Some more peaceful and lightweight passages altern with heavy riffs, and as we said the voice is multi-dimensional, taking you by the spine when suddenly going wild.

Here are two songs. It's a torture to choose so it's obvious now that you should go for the full album, and then the other albums ;)

The very catchy first song of the album, Too Much:

And one I really really like, Devil Ride:

Edit: I actually just watched the video, I have to say it's not so interesting. But the sound !!

Witch's not dead

I never talked about All Them Witches? This is a very bad mistake.
I will not go to much into the details, because I am lazy, anyway I never give really useful details. Let's say this band of guys from the Tennessee has already some experience behind, but more importantly a lot of talent. This is the kind of sound you need when you wanna let your mind wander, but in a psychedelic landscape tainted of old school blues. All Them Witches will make you visit desolated landscapes from an epic past. It's going through some heavy passages, where the slow fuzz and the distortion, as well as the echo on the voice will make you feel like connecting to an old magic power. This bewitching feeling is  intensified by the unique touch of sensitivity and melancolia in the voice, that you now need to experience:

This is not some more weird shit

... This is just the weirdest shit!

Some groovy funky psychedelic rock like something you will never hear enough. Sounds are very very pure but constantly changing. The funky vibe gives the whole composition a dancing rythm... But then the vocals... you might or might not like it as it is definitely melting some exotic influences with a unique style, at least it's funny to hear =D

Let's deliver the Japanese psychedelic groove:

Classic bluesy stoner

One of the best albums I've heard recently. For a band that seems to be quite young this is really astonishing and the powerful voice gives me shivers, especially in the last song.

More ethnic stoner

Let's post some new sound.

In the continuity of the Stoner rock from Epirus (Greece) that I brought to your ears previously, Kamni (or Камни) has some folk and traditional accents, over a massive dose of electricity. Coming from Russia, the entrancing melody of the traditional instruments melted in a riff storm will bring your soul to epic steppes.

Here is a very catchy first track from their A.T.O.M album, Shiva THC:
And the full album, which really has a cool cover:

Stoner Ηπείρου

Are you ready to be hypnotized by ancient melodies from the greek region Epirus, and magnetized by a terrific combination of traditional flute and heavy electric riffs?

Then this mind-blowing album will take you on an entrancing trip through some mythical woods peopled by wild dryades and dangerous fauns.

Super Acid Kraut

THIS GUY IS A GENIUS:

"Krautrock" is just so rich, when you think you've dug enough, something new and incredibly crazy, like this album, pops out of nowhere... Well I am a bit ignorant about krautrock but Achim Reichel seems to be one of the big figures of krautrock.

More info taken from this page: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ultimathule/krautrockers.html
(A light version of the krautrock encyclopedia "The Crack In The Cosmic Egg")

“ Because of his background, outside Germany, Achim Reichel is one of the most overlooked of key figures in Krautrock history. An original member of the Rattles in 1963, he decided to move on after touring as support to The Beatles in 1966, and formed his own beat group Wonderland. Nothing remarkable yet, as these were also a rather straight pop outfit. 1969 was the catalyst, first playing support to The Nice and Deep Purple, and then meeting Ravi Shankar, and there was a lot of new talent on the Hamburg scene.
Wonderland became Wonderland Band, in 1970, with a totally different concept, amounting to a most unique psychedelic album. I suggest you check the Wonderland Band entry for more info, though it was this album, and Achim's discovery of the echo guitar, that gave birth to a phenomenal series of albums under the working title of "Achim Reichel & Machines". Joining Achim was fellow Wonderland member, their lead singer Frank Dorstal as song writer, and a selection of some of the finest musicians on the Hamburg scene, for a series of albums that are nothing less than remarkable. Other projects from this era were Propeller and Libido.
After playing a major gig at Hamburg's Musikhalle in May 1970, Achim jamming with the likes of Ritchie Blackmore, Graham Bond and Pete Brown, first off was the unprecedented DIE GRÜNE REISE, with its off-beat rock 'n' roll and psychedelia, taking the listener on a sonic journey of dazzling diversity, textures and innovation unheard of in 1971, not least so the ending, which is amongst the weirdest, most fascinating, wildly tripped-out things I've ever heard! But, that was only the start, venturing further into the cosmos was the grand opus ECHO, a double album of echo trips, echoed echoes, spiralling guitars, rock and psychedelic trips beyond Ash Ra Tempel, again ending up in the realms of total weirdness! Simple description isn't possible. Being such a popular and successful musician had its advantages, though I doubt many Wonderland fans would have warmed to ECHO, and next Achim set up his own label Zebra. In fact this was the first of a series of ventures, later including Gorilla Musik and Ahorn Records. The next albums in this series were billed on the front covers as AR 3 and AR IV. AR 3 took the eccentric song format and guitar gymnastics of DIE GRÜNE REISE to more progressive realms, whereas AR IV amounted to huge side-long jam sessions. The later ERHOLUNG continued this style, but on a much more cosmic and jazzy level, where Achim's guitar notably becoming very Günter Schickert-like, with Jochen Petersen proving to be amongst the most cosmic of sax players around! AUTOVISION marked the end of this creative era which, for the most part, is actually a collection of solo guitar experiments, with a few group tracks.
After this, Achim returned to the pop world, disillusioned with the state of the progressive music scene in Germany. He has since proven to be a man of many talents, as singer, producer, and has also become quite a successful actor.

Sweden again

For those who wanna visit Stockholm, this is such a beautiful city, with old buildings and palaces testifying of the past grandeur of the king Vasa and its successors. However this is not my main point.

I randomly stopped by a disc seller in the old town, on Gamla Stan, because its name "Sound Pollution" could only presage good shit. See here.

In general, the metal and heavy music in Sweden seems to be quite big.

I think this sound polluted store is a dark Ali Baba's Cave where many many interesting things can be found. For my part, I fell on The Melvins (which are quite difficult to find elsewhere), Monkey3, some Monster Magnet...

Finally I bought:
Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes (excellentissime Norvegian punk);
and Karma To Burn - Appalachian Incantation + Cat Got Our Tongue EP.

I kind of randomly bought Karma To Burn because I only had a vague memory of it... Well I don't regret it!!!
This-is-awe-some.
In a mystical way, almost all the tracks of these albums are entitled by numbers and simultaneously don't contain any lyrics... 44, 42, 41, 46, 43, 45 and 24 in Appalachian Incantations. The exception is "Waiting on the western world" with lyrics, equally awesome.

This is a pure blend of stoner rock, brutal, spatial, taking you on a mind-blowing trip.

Here is "Thirty" from Cat Got Our Tongue :

Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes (excellentissime punk norvégien);
et Karma To Burn - Appalachian Incantation + Cat Got Our Tongue EP.

Voici "Thirty" de Cat Got Our Tongue :

Dark Magic

À écouter dans n'importe quel ordre mais si je devais choisir une chanson par album, ça serait : "Black book of cosmic salvation", "Lost (return into the void)" et "Give gravitation to the people".

It is time (again, but we still don't get enough) to break our head and go mental, with some f***¢#!**?beeep~!?%**cker  killer atomic bomb: Black Space Riders. Despite the fact that I wonder if this is the space that is black, or the riders, I post here their 3 albums, because they are just epic. All of them. this is a pure blend of heavy stoner rock navigating in outer space, passing by peaceful lost galaxy borders, and suddenly being blasted by the explosion of a supernova, or crossing very dense regions where no light can escape. These riders are quite badass, yes.
It is quite impressive to find such a little band of these quality and consistency. To me their music is seriously worth a big audience!

Enjoy some of my favorite songs: "Black book of cosmic salvation", "Lost (return into the void)" and "Give gravitation to the people". Well I actually think the riders are removing all gravitation in my mind.

To end this comprehensive discography, I am not gonna forget the remix of "Give Gravitation to the People". Yes. It is possible to remix stoner rock. And I would say it should be done more often! This one is a success, with a very nice industrial atmosphere :

Dolphins tripping on tetrodotoxin

Apparently, humans are not the only one to make use of psychotropic substances: dolphins are getting high on... tetrodotoxin! This molecule is produced by various fish of the tetraondotidae family, including the pufferfish and the well-known fugu, very appreciated in the -kind of crazy- japanese cooking (between 20 and 100 deaths per year due to this specific intoxication...). This defense molecule inhibits the ionic channels (sodium-potassium) that transmit the electric signal along a neuron, and well, that can be a problem...

Old weird psych band

Psychedelic Turkisch II

Well... I just stumbled on this thing I must share: a selection of turkish psychedelic songs by the french radio Nova (seriously one of the most musically interesting).
So to keep on with our psychedelic travels around the world, after the cultural mix between psych rock and traditional music in Thailand, I invite you to enjoy this other example of syncretism between western culture and turkish culture. This specific style flourished from the 60's to the 70's, before being replaced by metal (tsss).

The Molam, psychedelic blues from Thailand

Discovery of the month, no kidding: the psychedelic blues from Thailand, called Molam, a very successful mix of traditional influences with the rock culture, more precisely the psychedelic rock! One iconic instrument the "pin", or "phin", a kind of thai lute with naga head (quite badass already), but turned into an electric instrument with two necks... Plus, in Thailand, this is becoming a big phenomenon, quite surprisingly when you compare with Europe where psychedelic music (rock but also electro) is quite "underground" so far.

Stoners are too slow

Already heard about Dragonaut by Sleep? This song that is considered as the ultimate stoner rock master piece? Just my opinion, but I've always found it a bit slow... And the result with speed x 1.5 is so good:

A track from a not very psychedelic band, but with this flying feeling and exotic sounds, also one of the rare -if not the single?- instrumental tracks from Noir Désir. A French rock band (and one of the best) in addition.

Øresund Space Collective live in Loppen, Copenhagen

Hi everyone,

The improvised space rock band from Denmark Øresund Space Collective are giving access to free download and streaming of their performance in Loppen, the concert place in Christiania, very creative and dynamic area of Copenhagen.

For the story, Christiania is a neighbourhood more or less independent from the government, created in an abandonned military zone in 1971. It is also famous for the abundant cannabis trade that is tolerated there, even if I am not sure about it being legal, as for every other law concerning Christiania, which remains a self-proclaimed autonomous zone, so far accepted by Denmark. Well, but the best point in this place is of course the frequency of stoner rock and psychedelic rock events that happen there! In the last 6 months, Earthless, Brant Bjork and Fu Manchu played there, and just recently Øresund Space Collective!

Enjoy these psychedelic jams here (I really like "Stargate 7341" and "One more space out"):

Cape Town discovery

I wanna share with you a band I saw playing in a small bar of Cape Town, wonderful South-African city by the way.

To precise the context, rock doesn't have a big influence in South-Africa; during the 5 months I spent there, I had the feeling that there isn't many rock bands, and that rock events are quite rare. To simplify, rock is principally a white music, and even in this part of the population, the public is not as interested as in Europe. They prefer electronic music, house (very bad and very good things), and of course some amount of real commercial shit like Ed Sheeran or John Legend.
However, South Africa has a rich musical scene, which is quite dynamic, like South-African house (with rhythms from black music that really make you dance), or mixed styles like the pop/soul influenced by traditional southern Africa music of Freshly Ground. There are many other examples.

So, there are many amazing things in South-African music, but I missed rock ;) . Then, imagine how enthusiastic I was when this small band playing in a bar of my neighborhood was performing a very good punk rock/ska! The West Coast Wolves are doing a fast and powerful punk rock, close to ska and folk, and with additional instruments like... djembe :) Also the voice is very nice, quite hoarse, which makes the hard passages even better. We can feel some John Butler Trio influence, but the hoarser voice makes it harder, and the global style is more punk.

Just enjoy these 3 songs they recorded, and wait for the many others that really deserve to be recorded. My favorite song is the 3rd one, "Driving Business".

Istanbul psychedelia

Good evening, dear hypothetical readers,

I was feeling in a psychedelic mood, but also was dreaming about fantastic travels, and I thought that some turkish music would be appropriate. Warning, I am not talking about some random turkish music, but about psychedelic turkish music! Yes, this is what Baba Zula is doing, a band of sound poets making mind-blowing and electric oriental melodies, a unique sound they call Istanbul psychedelia. No more words :

Desert rock

Bonjour.

Slo Burn - Amusing The Amazing

Big desert rock sound from Slo Burn! In a few seconds of listening I can feel some Kyuss touch, and this is quite normal since John Garcia, leader of Slo Burn, was the singer of Kyuss. This album Amusing The Amazing is excellent, in terms of melodies, riffs and rhythms. The sound is quite representative of the desert rock of the 90's, but there is also a personality that gives a real identity to the band. Big sound.

Krautrock II

Guten Tag,

I already introduced this silly word "krautrock" with the band Amon Düül II, but there are far many other interesting german underground rock bands!

Neu!Can, Malesh, Guru GuruFaust, HarmoniaCluster...

I just wanna share this one with you: Guru Guru - Ooga Booga from the Känguru album.

There are many live versions on youtube, I let you explore this ;)

Web radio : Guitar Spirit

1 - Au stoner rock un culte exclusif tu voueras ;
2 - Guitar Spirit sans relâche tu adoreras ;
3 - Rainbows Are Free toujours tu écouteras.

Hi everyone,

I must first of all precise my very intense lazyness. and my bad english. Why do I say that? Because this is a hassle to try to translate my french text into a faithful english version! So from now, I decided I would write freely something more or less different in english, and it will probably provide me more pleasure in writing. Because I'm having a lot of fun with my mother tongue (interpret these words correctly, please), but much less when trying to translate identically. The other reason is that maybe google translation does a better job than me. The last reason is that you should all learn french, bloody ignorants, this language should be the universal one. Peace. (I always have a doubt when writing on internet, if people will get when I am not serious. I think many could misinterpret a joke. Like here for example I was really serious, no kidding)

So.

I wanted to come back on the fortuitous events that led to my quasi-religious conversion into this occult musical sphere which is stoner-psychedelic-doom. I was listening to Rainbows Are Free - "Are You Dead" today and I suddenly remembered that I owe the greatest gratitude to a french web radio from Lyon, Guitar Spirit (click on the link, links are in blue/purple...), an excellent radio for heavy, fat, acid and brutal sounds. For bands exploiting the full potential of electric guitar.

Among other guitaristic wonders, I heard two songs that opened me the doors to a continent of sonorous might. The first one was Monster Magnet - "Powertrip". It made me daydream. Thirsty for more knowledge about it, I discovered the words stoner rock and space rock, and dug into the influences of Dave Wyndorf (the charismatic leader), finding other hallucinogenic UFOs like Hawkwind and Grand Funk Railroad. You must just realize that probably no one in Europe, even more in my generation, ever heard about these american bands. But the single stoner rock idea offered me countless discoveries. The second song was the one from Rainbows Are Free I just mentionned. It stays in mind so much that every time someone forgets to answer to some message from me, I just want to send this huge "Are You Deeeaaad?" song...

Now you must remember and follow three commandments from this post:

1 - Stoner rock worship you shall;
2 - Guitar Spirit love you will;
3 - Rainbows Are Free listen you must.

I think I possess the cosmic truth that psychedelia brought to my mind, and that's why I want to provide to the ignorant and lost minds the understandable translation of these space waves that lead to happiness. My prophetic writings are coming to shed some rainbow light on your minds! A new cult will arise. Be my followers.

Culte Unique

My week has been rich in discoveries, in particular thank to a blog I just found: More Fuzz ! (in addition made in France, yeaah).

Here is his very interesting top 20 of 2014 albums:
morefuzz.net/what-the-fuzz/mr-fuzz-top-20-albums-2014/

And I'll keep many very exciting things from this selection, like Brown Sabbath (master work) or Uma Thurman, and also two french bands of different styles: Coffin on Tyres and Mars Red Sky. Hope to see you live guys! So far, my knowledge of stoner or psych bands from France was pretty limited, I knew there is Glowsun as well whose sound is psychedelic, but I definitely need to explore the subject more in depth. A post about french stoner/heavy psych is for soon!

My written wanderings should not close without some space flight, that's why I'm just providing your ears in some psychedelic fuel with my coup de coeur from this top, I nominate Monomyth!

First of all, I like their name so much I could go preach this cosmic monotheism to all the lost ears. Moreover, one of the members is playing a double-neck guitar, and I don't care what purists will say, but this is fucking badass.

Ok, so far I just talked about details, superfluous, the surface layer, what exalts the beautiful and temporarily hides the medriocre. Don't be afraid, when you scratch this layer, you find some solid and pure material, something similar to star nucleus, a generator of long cosmic flights, light-years from this heavy and dreamless world... With Monomyth you glide very far in the nebulae of the outer space, slightly lulled by their really clean sound, soft but subtly hoarsened when the guitars bring some melodies. You'll just live an epic adventure in the middle of asteroids and this is a experience of absolute spiritual fullness.

Enjoy my favorite one "Spheres" and all the excellent others as well!

Documentaire Underground Rock 70-90

About the Greek stoner rock, I had said I would talk more. Something said, executed!

Talking about execution, your ears will endure this bomb from 1000mods:

"Reverbs of the new world"

We notice the influence of classics like Kyuss, which seems quite striking to me, but the creativity of this band renews our interest all along their two records Vulture and Super Van Vacation. Go-listen-to-this-immediately!!
By the way, I am still waiting to see a greek stoner band singing in the local language, I am pretty sure it would be interesting. Even more in ancient Greek, I am just saying someone should try it.

Love to my ears

The Melvins.

Honnestly, comes a time when jokes are over. I am gonna talk about something serious. Something that takes the head to pieces. The Melvins. Good raw reference stoner, and quite loaded in illicit substances.

And I just love the crazy face of the singer.

If you are looking for a relaxing ambiance music, I encourage you to play the entire album Stoner Witch, it flows naturally as one piece. Er... relaxing? Paradoxically, some tracks are really relaxing, this is the beauty of this record, you jump from the atomic bomb to the atmospheric peace, this is completely moody, unpredictable, crazy, substantially disturbed. In short, a masterpiece.
